We have created dozens of PowerPoint presentations for our clients. We create professional, custom presentations with sophisticated use of content and interactivity and informative visuals that make our clients look professional in front of the most demanding audiences – so we know our stuff.
We like to be as efficient as possible for our clients so we thought we’d offer this power-tip to possibly help you with your PowerPoint projects.
Slide Master Templates
PowerPoint has what’s called Slide Master templates. This is where we define slide or page templates and styling so that pages are consistently formatted. Defining the page templates also allows us to make changes over several pages at one time just by modifying the page templates. So instead of changing a font size or color, or the background on each slide, venture into the Slide Master to make those changes on the templates.
CAUTION: Don’t make changes to individual slides on elements that are visible on many slides or pages. Make those changes in the Slide Master. Then the changes made will be applied to all of those slides at once. This will improve consistency over your slides and decrease the amount of time it takes to format your content.
Changes to individual elements override Slide Master settings
If changes are made to individual elements on a slide or multiple slides, those changes will override the Slide Master’s settings for that element. This is important because further changes to that element will need to be done individually and will not necessarily be affected by the Slide Master’s settings or changes to the Slide Master. Additionally, if you want to copy that slide(s) into another presentation and apply a new Slide Master style, theme or layout to that slide(s), changes that were made on individual elements will not fully adhere to the new Slide Master settings. This makes it more time consuming when importing slides into a presentation. Yes, you can still fine-tune or make minute changes to individual elements on some slides, but if it’s desired to quickly and easily import slides into a new or existing presentation and have all the elements change to the new theme, changes should be done to the Slide Master and slides should adhere to an original Slide Master’s layouts as much as possible.
